In the Flow of the Game: Mindfulness Meditation for Athletes

  • Internal Arts New England 102 Bridge Road Salisbury, MA, 01952 United States (map)

A meditation program with Ted Jones

In 1993, legendary coach Phil Jackson, then with the Chicago Bulls, added meditation teacher George Mumford to his staff, ushering in a new era in sports psychology grounded in mindfulness. The essence of that practice is to bring full, directed attention to each moment, just as it is. In the sphere of athletics, this has numerous benefits, perhaps the most valuable being the ability to relax into the flow of the game with less distraction from intrusive thoughts. Join Ted Jones, a former competitive athlete and coach, to learn the basics of mindfulness meditation and to discuss how this practice can benefit you, both on the field and off.

This program will include instruction followed by periods of sitting and walking meditation. It is open to experienced meditators as well as complete beginners.

Ted Jones has been practicing insight meditation since 1978, when he began sitting with his principal teacher, Larry Rosenberg. He spent his professional career in mental health as a therapist, clinical supervisor, and program manager. Read more at Ted’s teacher page.
