The Bahiya Sutta is one of the Buddha's shortest and most profound teachings. Beloved in both Zen and early Buddhism, it points us toward direct, clear seeing in each moment, free from the filters of thought and self-centeredness. It reveals the possibility of a deeply intimate and liberated way of meeting experience, both in formal meditation and in the midst of everyday life. For those who aspire to bring practice and daily living into complete unity, few teachings are as clear, immediate, and transformative.
In each class session, guided and silent meditation periods will be complemented by reflection and a discussion period.
Matthew Daniell is the guiding teacher of NSIMC. He has been practicing Buddhist meditation since the 1980s, including over a decade in Asia, where he practiced Zen intensively in Japan, Tibetan Buddhism in India, and Insight meditation in Burma, India, and Thailand.
