In this 12-week series, we will undergo a deep investigation into specific energies that often hinder or block our ability to live in a fresh, resourceful, and wise manner. Known to Buddhist meditators as the five "hindrances," four of them comprise two sets of opposites: low energy and restlessness are one pair, desire and ill will the other. The fifth is doubt, which stands alone, and yet is connected to the others. Instead of being at the mercy of these energies and the difficult thoughts and emotions they are often intimately bound up with, the Buddha offers clear strategies for responding to the hindrances. We can learn to recognize and work with them more skillfully, and grow a kind of inner acceptance, kindness, and clarity that helps the quality of our formal practice and daily living.
As a support for our inquiry, we will be referring to the book Unhindered: A Mindful Path through the Five Hindrances by Gil Fronsdal (one of Matthew’s trainers during his years in the Spirit Rock/IMS teacher training program). Each session will include roughly 35 minutes of silent and guided seated meditation, a shorter period of walking meditation, a reflection from Matthew, and time for discussion. Each week, an email will be sent out to participants with instructions for home practice, and class recordings will be available in case you miss one. With the community support of our shared practice and inquiry, new and experienced students of mindfulness alike may find benefit in this practice series.
