Have you ever had a "wake up moment" in a conversation, when you realized that your mind has wandered and that you haven't heard a word spoken in the previous 30 seconds? Have you ever found yourself formulating a counter-argument in your mind before the person you're talking with has actually stopped speaking? Have you ever found yourself emotionally triggered by something someone said to you, and you reacted immediately in a way that you later regretted? These are all examples that can lead to misunderstanding and conflict in relationships. In this morning retreat, we will learn how the practice of Insight meditation can assist us in listening more carefully, accurately, and empathetically, as well as deepening our awareness of our own reactivity. The result is movement toward a style of relating based on clarity, understanding, and humility.
The retreat will include instruction in insight meditation appropriate for both beginners and experienced practitioners, as well as exercises specifically tailored to the topic.
Ted Jones has been practicing Insight meditation since 1978, when he began sitting with his principal teacher, Larry Rosenberg. He spent his professional career in mental health as a therapist, clinical supervisor, and program manager. Read more about Ted at his teacher page.
